Meet Zeena Musallam Kandalaft

My love for writing began in elementary school when my English teacher introduced the “Thought Notebook.” That’s when I first discovered how much I enjoyed expressing myself through words. That small notebook grew into years of journaling and nearly thirty years of poetry, which I later published for my three children.

Over time, my writing naturally shifted toward playful and imaginative children’s stories. I’ve written several children’s books; some are already published, and others are on the way. One of my favorite projects is a five-book educational series for elementary-aged kids, each one focused on a literary device: alliteration, metaphors, similes, onomatopoeia, and personification. I wanted to make learning fun and spark curiosity in young readers. I’ve also published two Christmas stories and a lighthearted book about a silly cat named Fred.

In recent years, becoming a grandmother opened a new chapter of inspiration for me. My grandchildren brought back the magic and joy of childhood in the most beautiful way. They reminded me why I fell in love with storytelling in the first place.

When I’m not writing, I enjoy reading, gardening, and spending time with my two cats and two dogs; I absolutely adore animals.

Writing has been part of me ever since that first notebook, but my grandchildren have sparked in me a new life, a new purpose, and a renewed sense of magic.

An Interview with Zeena Musallam Kandalaft

How did your love for storytelling begin?

My love for storytelling began long before I ever dreamed I would become an author. As a child, novels and poetry made me feel at home, a place where imagination had no limits and emotions felt safe to explore. As I grew older, especially through my work as an educator, mother, and later as a grandmother, I began to truly understand the power stories hold. That realization sparked my desire to write stories that children would enjoy and learn from.

What do books mean to you in a child’s early years?

Books are one of the most meaningful tools we can offer a child in their early years, as they have the power to spark curiosity, introduce language, and evoke emotional intelligence. Beyond that, books create bonding moments between a grandmother reading to her grandson, a parent winding down at bedtime, and a child discovering something new for the first time. Those moments build a strong connection and pure joy.

How do you balance fun storytelling with meaningful lessons?

I believe children learn best through stories they can truly connect with. I always begin with an imaginative, playful narrative and gently weave an educational lesson into it, supported by illustrations that are just as engaging. Whether the message is about teamwork, self-acceptance, or not judging others, my goal is to create stories that entertain, inspire, and stay with a child long after they finish reading.

How do you choose the books that become part of your collections?

I choose books with both heart and intention. I gravitate toward stories that carry imagination, education, and purpose; books that offer something meaningful to little readers. My focus is not only on the messages, but also on fun illustrations, diverse characters, and authentic storytelling. My intention is to spark curiosity, encourage empathy, or put a smile on a child’s face.

What advice would you give families trying to build a reading habit?

Reading becomes a habit when it is a part of a family’s rhythm. It’s always helpful to create a routine before bedtime, after school, or even to create a cozy reading corner at home. Let children choose their books, reread the ones they love, and explore stories at their own pace.
